Katie Beatrice Hall pushed the U.S. holiday into law

Today, many will celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday — reflecting on history and civil rights and participating in service projects in tribute, or even just enjoying having a day off.

For one Gary (Indiana) woman, it’s much more than all of that, because her name, Katie Beatrice Hall, will forever be synonymous with the holiday becoming law.

“I’d always wanted to see a national holiday honoring Dr. King, and as a state senator and state rep in Indiana, I’d sponsored legislation for a state holiday, but I could never get it passed in the other house,” recalls the now 72-year-old Hall.
