Women photojournalist and war correspondent Thérèse Bonney

One of the first women to receive a doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris in 1921, American photographer Thérèse Bonney went on to work as a field war correspondent and media publicist. She became famous as a photojournalist when she published her stark black-and-white photographs in the outstanding photobook, “Europe’s Children,” depicting the ravages of war on the child. First woman journalist in India - Homai Vyarawalla

Known as the first woman journalist in India, Ms. Homai Vyarawalla died recently on January 15, 2012 at the age of 98. Covering iconic stories with the likes of Indian President Jawaharlal Nehru, Vietnamese communist leader Ho Chi Minh, French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson and American war correspondent Margaret Bourke White, Vyarawalla also covered the funeral of Mahatma Ghandi and the changing tides of partition in India in 1947. Known to be independent, savvy and astute as she bicycled throughout Delhi getting her stories, she went on from a press photographer for the British Information Services to a chronicler of histoy during times of great change in India.
